Prize of VUV-Vereinigte Unternehmerverbände Aachen goes to Charlotte Dujardin and her “Ballerina”

Charlotte Dujardin is back. And then some! For…

Charlotte Dujardin is back. And then some! For the first time since 2019, the three-time British Olympic gold medallist is competing at the CHIO Aachen again. Meanwhile as a mother and with a promising young horse in her luggage, as was shown today in the Prize of VUV-Vereinigte Unternehmerverbände Aachen, the Prix St. Georges.

Charlotte Dujardin brought the eight-year-old KWPN mare Times Kismet by Ampere to Aachen, in addition to her World Championship horse Imhotep. The two of them won the Prize of VUV-Vereinigte Unternehmerverbände Aachen with an outstanding score of 77.588 percent, almost four percent more than the judges awarded the rest of the field. That is a small margin in the dressage sport. Even though this is the mare’s first major tournament away from home.

Their history explains why this is not a problem: “I’ve had her since she just turned five. So, we have known each other for a long time and have been on the same path so far. That’s why our bond is very strong. She can be a bit of a moody mare at home. But she has a lot of trust in me, that she does everything for me. I take her by the hand and she says, ‘Okay, let’s do it’.”

But that is not the only reason why Charlotte Dujardin particularly enjoys riding Times Kismet. “She gives me a magical feeling. Riding a horse like that is a dream, that’s why we do it. I just sit on her back and basically don’t have to do anything.” And the quality is also on point: “She is very, very elastic, elegant, light-footed, a real ballerina. I really hope she stays healthy. I think she can be an Olympic horse.”

Today, Times Kismet already left some highly talented competitors behind her. Second place went to the pair that had won both tests of the small tour last year: Frederic Wandres on the Hanoverian gelding Quizmaster by Quasar de Charry. Today they scored 73.883 percent. Third place went to the pair that won the Nuremberg Burg Cup Final in December: the Swiss rider Andrina Suter, who rode the Westphalian Briatore by Belissimo M, an eight-year-old as well, with a score of 72.294 percent.

Teike Carstensen and her family horse Greece win German U25 Trophy of the Stiftung Deutscher Pferdesport, Prize of Family Müter

Exciting finale in the final of the German U25 Trophy of the Stiftung Deutscher Pferdesport, Prize of Family Müter! Five pairs in the jump-off, where it became clear: homebred is the best approach.

When a little filly by Mylord Carthago out of Online IX by Quinar Z was born at the Carstensen family’s Sollwitt stallion station in Schleswig-Holstein in 2014, Teike Carstensen, who was 15 years old at the time, was one of the first people to see the little grey lady. She was given the name Greece. When the mare did her first jumps, Teike sat in the saddle. When Greece went to her first competitions, she did so as well. And now, nine years later, the two of them were able to celebrate their victory in the final of the German U25 Trophy of the Stiftung Deutscher Pferdesport, Prize of Family Müter, in the Aachener Soers. It is guaranteed that this will not be the pair’s last shared victory. Teike Carstensen’s boss Stefan Johannsen, for whom she is employed as a rider, secured the mare for Teike together with investors.

A total of five pairs had reached the jump-off, three remained clear a second time. With a courageous ride, in which even outsiders could see how well the two know each other and how much they trust each other, Teike Carstensen (24) and Greece jumped to victory with a good second ahead of the competitors. The pair needed 39.80 seconds.

The clock stopped at 40.84 seconds for the duo in second place, Bundeswehr sports student Sönke Fallenberg in the saddle of his Westphalian Congress daughter Chakira TF. The two share a similar history as the winning pair. Chakira was also born in the Fallenberg family’s stable and made her way up under the 21-year-old Sönke Fallenberg. Their journey has already taken them to the European Championships for Young Riders. And the Soers is already familiar terrain for Sönke. If he has his way, it won’t stop at participating in the U25 Tour. When asked what his long-term goals are, the answer came without a hint of hesitation: “Championships!”

When he said that, an approving nod came from his two colleagues on the podium. Besides Teike Carstensen, this was the equestrian Pia-Luise Baur from Baden-Württemberg. In the saddle of the ten-year-old KWPN gelding Iscayo by Biscayo, she jumped into third place in 43.63 seconds. The 24-year-old has already laid the foundation for being able to return to the Soers one day by acquiring her successful horse from today herself.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, takes a look behind the scenes

Together with Frank Kemperman, Vice President of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennvereins (ALRV), and Nick Russell, Consul General of the United Kingdom, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne set off on a tour of the traditional showgrounds at the Aachen Soers on Wednesday morning.

A passion for the equestrian sport and horse breeding is very deep rooted within the royal family. Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne herself became the youngest European Eventing Champion in 1971, her daughter, Zara Tindall, won individual gold at the FEI World Equestrian Games 2006 in Aachen – and her mother was there live to support her. Now 17 years later The Princess has returned to the Aachen Soers. After the festive Opening Ceremony on Tuesday evening, during which HRH officially declared the CHIO Aachen as being open, she came back to the traditional showgrounds on Wednesday morning. Accompanied by Frank Kemperman, the Vice President of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein (ALRV), and Nick Russell, the Consul General of the United Kingdom, she spent approx. three hours at the Aachen Soers taking a look behind the scenes.

The Princess visited the Boehringer Ingelheim Grooms’ Lounge, where Mel Jobst, board member of the International Grooms Association (IGA); and board member of the ALRV, Birgit Rosenberg; told her about the details of this area that was set up especially for the grooms. After a tour of the stables, they took a look round the Deutsche Bank Stadium. Here HRH met the chefs d’equipe of the British jumping and dressage teams, Di Lampard and Caroline Griffith, as well as the Executive, British Equine, Jim Eyre. Princess Anne took this opportunity to wish her country’s riders present including the three-time Olympic gold medallist, Charlotte Dujardin, the double World Champion Charlotte Fry and Olympic gold medallist, Ben Maher, good luck for the coming days at the CHIO Aachen 2023.

On the subsequent tour around the CHIO Aachen Village, HRH dropped by at the CHIO Aachen fan shop and the CHIO Kids Day, then the Royal visitor met up with team that is responsible for the jumping discipline at the CHIO Aachen. The course designer, Frank Rothenberger; Discipline Manager, Carsten Rothermund and employees of the course team were present. Of course a drive around the expansive cross-country track at the Aachen Soers couldn’t possibly have been missing for a former eventer. The course designer, Rüdiger Schwarz; the technical delegate of the FEI, Giuseppe della Chiesa and chef d’equipe of the British eventers, Richard Waygood were waiting for The Princess at a water obstacle, where she expertly measured the distances.

The tour ended with a reception in the CHIO Aachen museum, where Princess Anne signed the guest book in the presence of the ALRV President, Stefanie Peters. She was then introduced to the employees of the CHIO Aachen team, and Dr. Doris Beaujean, CHIO Aachen Museum Director, presented a selection of special exhibits. HRH was particularly impressed at coming across the riding helmet of her daughter Zara Tindall, which she had worn on her way to winning the gold medal at the World Equestrian Games in 2006.

Marc Dilasser and his “little lion” win the Prize of Handwerk

The Wednesday at the CHIO Aachen 2023 kicked…

The Wednesday at the CHIO Aachen 2023 kicked off with the Prize of Handwerk, a 1.45-metre competition against the clock. The winner Marc Dilasser from France couldn’t have been more overjoyed.

Marc Dilasser headed the field of 42 participants in the Prize of Handwerk after knocking 0.12 seconds off the best time. He had saddled the 13-year Selle Français gelding, E2K Abricot Ennemmelle by Quaprice Bois Margot. “As you can see he is a bit wild (laughs),” Marc said about his mount and laughed. “He is a little lion and I love him to bits! He has already won so many classes at big shows. He is a fighter and so clever!”

Dilasser has known E2K Abricot Ennemmelle since the chestnut horse was five and brought him up to top competition level himself. It is the second time Dilasser has competed at the CHIO Aachen, but he has never actually won a class up until now. So, he was delighted after his triumph: “Riding here is simply a dream! I told my groom that I can tell my small sons now that I won in Aachen. Okay, it wasn’t the biggest class, but nevertheless a victory in Aachen!”

Laura Kraut, the Olympic team silver medallist from Tryon, and her speed specialist, Haley by Quality Time TN, narrowly missed that victory. They had led the field on a time of 59.53 seconds until Dilasser and E2K Abricot Ennemmelle notched up a time of 59.41.

Maurice Tebbel and his Hanoverian-bred Quasimodo van de Molendreef son, Quasi Top, were delighted at coming third today after already ranking second in the STAWAG Opening Jumping Competition yesterday. Tebbel said how happy he is to be back in Aachen after a year’s break. Hardly surprising, after two placings under the top three after the first two classes.

Media Night with Anna Ermakova, Franziska van Almsick and Heino Ferch

It is the most famous “red carpet” in…

It is the most famous “red carpet” in the entire equestrian sport, over which the guests of the Media Night traditionally walk on the opening evening of the CHIO Aachen. Together with the co-host Hermann Bühlbecker, the sole proprietor of the “Aachener Printen & Schokoladenfabrik Henry Lambertz GmbH & Co. KG”, the organisers had invited guests to attend the traditional gala evening on Tuesday.

One of the most coveted photo motifs of the evening was the winner of Let’s Dance 2023, Anna Ermakova. The 23-year-old daughter of the tennis legend, Boris Becker, beamed into the cameras together with her mother, Angela Ermakova, before she was warmly welcomed by Hermann Bühlbecker and Stefanie Peters, President of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein. The actor, Heino Ferch; the swimming legend, Franziska van Almsick, and the former skier, Maria Höfl-Riesch, were all delighted to attend. The State Premier of NRW, Hendrik Wüst, was visible impressed before his big appearance at the Opening Ceremony: “The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has a horse on its coat of arms and we have the largest equestrian show in the world here in Aachen. That fits together wonderfully and I always enjoy coming here.”

Together with 38,500 spectators, Wüst and the other guests let themselves be enchanted by the spectacular Opening Ceremony, during the course of which Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne and the State Premier of NRW jointly officially opened the CHIO Aachen 2023. Then, the guests carried on celebrating in the “Champions’ Circle” until the early hours.

38,500 spectators celebrate a fabulous festival with plenty of British charm

There was something special in the air on…

There was something special in the air on Tuesday evening at the Aachen Soers. The Union Jack was flying in the Main Stadium, the traditional sounds of “Big Ben” rang out from the loudspeakers. And that was just the beginning of a magnificent Opening Ceremony that was filled with British flair, the evening was lent an added regal touch by the presence of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne.

The crowd in Aachen already got up out of their seats during the first minute of the traditional Opening Ceremony to welcome HRH Princess Anne, waving a sea of flags. Stood at the side of the State President of NRW, Hendrik Wüst, the member of the British royal family said that it was lovely to be back in Aachen, before she actually declared the CHIO Aachen 2023 officially open in German, to the delight of the 38,500 spectators. Princess Anne’s way to the stand was lined by the flags of the nations taking part in the World Equestrian Festival, carried among others by the most successful dressage rider of all time, Isabell Werth, and the British show-jumper, Nick Skelton, who won the Rolex Grand Prix in Aachen in the year 2013. A spectacular floodlit Opening Ceremony followed, which impressed the spectators with typical British flamboyance.

“All you need is love”, based on the legendary Beatles hymn, was the motto of the evening. And that was not only tangible in the stands, but also on the “Holy Grass”. With traditional show acts, bagpipe music and British-style dance performances to groovy music, Great Britain demonstrated how much old traditions merge into one with the lifestyle of the new era in the country on the other side of the English Channel. The absolute highlight was the appearance of the Household Cavalry. The mounted soldiers, one is otherwise only familiar with from the pompous parades on London’s streets, celebrated their world-famous Musical Ride and conjured up an impressive mood in the Main Stadium.

It was colourful and also rather magical when over 100 children paid tribute to the renowned young magician, Harry Potter, with their performance and whisked the crowd off into the secret world of Hogwarts. A choreography comprising of over 100 children that also featured the film heroine Alice in Wonderland and the musical legend, Mary Poppins. The programme was rounded off by plenty of horses and even more equine tradition. For example, from small Welsh ponies through to enormous Shire horses lots of typical, British horse breeds galloped over the “Holy Grass”. They were accompanied by splendid English-style carriages, the spectacular James Bond show by the stunt rider Josh Clemens and a spectacular rain dance, during the course of which the cool wet substance that is so typical for Great Britain really did pour down on the protagonists. The many Grand National Shetland ponies that raced through the ring with their mini jockeys on board proved to be the crowd’s favourites. The final parade of all participants, accompanied by classics from British music history and a huge fountain that lit up an impressive play of colours in the sky over Aachen brought the Opening Ceremony to a close. A crowning glory that whet everyone’s appetite for the coming days at the CHIO Aachen 2023.

Gregory Wathelet wins the Sparkassen-Youngsters-Cup with a horse following in Coree’s footsteps

27.06.2023 19:45

In 2017, the Belgian rider Gregory Wathelet won…

In 2017, the Belgian rider Gregory Wathelet won the Rolex Grand Prix for the first time in Aachen with Coree. Today, he won the Sparkassen-Youngsters-Cup with a young horse that apart from the colour also has a lot of other things in common with that fantastic grey mare.

We are talking about the eight-year-old Cornet Obolensky daughter, Flagship de Hus. The French grey mare sped round the course with Gregory Wathelet to take the victory in a time of 34.44 seconds in the 1.45-metre two-phase competition, which is the first leg of the Sparkassen-Youngsters-Cup. Second place went to Jens Baackmann riding the eight-year-old Holstein-bred gelding, Lorenz by Livello, the pair crossed the finish line in 35.39 seconds. The just seven-year-old Hanoverian-bred stallion, Cornet XL, who descends from Cornet Obolensky, came third.

Grey mare, sire Cornet Obolensky, owner Nybor Horses – that rings a bell… That’s right, all of the above-cited key data about Gregory Wathelet’s aspiring young horse, Flagship de Hus, also applies for his first Rolex Grand Prix winner, Coree. And as far as the quality is concerned – Flagship de Hus came ninth in the World Jumping Championships for Young Horses in 2022, and today she prove that she also feels at home in the magnificent setting of the Aachen Soers. Gregory Wathelet raved: “She is a real fighter! It her first time here, but she wasn’t overwhelmed by it at all, which I am very glad about. She was very focused and carefree in the jump-off – and she is fast! I am very proud of her!”

German U25 Trophy qualifier – first class, first victory for Hannes Ahlmann

27.06.2023 17:04

Hannes Ahlmann has won diverse medals at Youngster…

Hannes Ahlmann has won diverse medals at Youngster European Championships, but it was the first time he has competed in the Final of the German U25 of the Stiftung Deutscher Pferdesport, Prize of Family Müter. The premiere couldn’t have got off to a better start.

The 22-year-old Hannes Ahlmann from Schleswig-Holstein steered his Holstein-bred stallion Nerrado by Nekto to victory in the qualifier for the German U25 Trophy in fantastic style and at a rhythmic pace. Ultimately, the pair were almost three seconds faster than Franziska Müller with Cornado’s Queen, who have made it onto the winners’ rostrum several times here in Aachen. Ahlmann crossed the finish line in 69.73 seconds, Müller and the Rheinland-bred Cornado daughter took 72.65 seconds. Max Haunhorst and his just nine-year-old OS gelding, Chrismon by Christian finished third after jumping clear in 72.90 seconds. The latter had the opportunity to prepare his appearance at the Soers under the aegis of the Dutch national coach, Jos Lansink, in the scope of the Programme of Excellence of the CHIO Aachen CAMPUS.

Hannes Ahlmann has mostly notched up his major achievements to-date under the aegis of his father, Dirk Ahlmann, who himself rode for Germany at international level in the past. Being able to compete here in Aachen means a lot to him and of course the fact that he won straight off delighted him: “What a cool feeling! Competing for the first time and winning in Aachen, that is a cool statement!“ The feeling of riding into a stadium that holds 50,000 people is “indescribable”.

Tomorrow he wants to enjoy that feeling again. The Final of the German U25 of the Stiftung Deutscher Pferdesport, Prize of Family Müter begins at 2.15 p.m.

The victory in the STAWAG Opening Jumping Competition goes to Evelina Tovek and Sweden

27.06.2023 16:00

The Swedish rider, Evelina Tovek, is the first…

The Swedish rider, Evelina Tovek, is the first winner in the jumping classes at the CHIO Aachen 2023. In the STAWAG Opening Jumping Competition she left someone trailing behind her, who has been looking forward to this show week more than any other this year

The action in the Main Stadium at the Aachen Soers kicked off with the STAWAG Opening Jumping, a 1.45 metre competition against the clock, today. The fastest pair: Evelina Tovek and the Rhineland-bred Contendro daughter, Cortina, who jumped clear in 60.26 seconds. Second place went to Maurice Tebbel on the just eight-year-old Hanoverian-bred Quasi Top by Quasimodo van de Molendreef, who reached the finish line in a time of 61.91 seconds. And in third place, Jens Fredricson demonstrated with his ten-year-old Diarado daughter, Diarado’s Rose Elith, (61.91) that Sweden has arrived at the CHIO Aachen in top form.

Evelina Tovek was delighted to be back here in Aachen again, especially with Cortina, because: “She was on board last year already and she loves this stadium!” Cortina is one of three horses she has brought with her to Aachen. Her next major goal for this weekend: the Mercedes-Benz Nations’ Cup, which she probably won’t saddle Cortina for, but instead a different mare from her team, Azaria Dinero. Evelina Tovek knows what it is like to win the Nations’ Cup at the Soers. She was a member of the victorious, Swedish team in 2019.

The runner-up in the STAWAG Opening Jumping, Maurice Tebbel, has also had “his” hymn played at the Soers on the Thursday evening before. He didn’t compete at the show last year and it was very important to him that this didn’t happen again: “Missing out on Aachen for one year – watching on TV last year certainly got me itching to get back here and that was my absolute main goal this year – to qualify for Aachen. I am overjoyed to be back again!”
