The CHIO Aachen stands for top international sport with a long tradition. But at the same time it is also a place of encounter and exchange. The #neuland congress has been held during Germany’s largest sporting event since 2018 and thus offers scope for an exchange at the highest level. Together with the ATEC, the congress unites sport with deep tech, entrepreneurship and innovation, to lay the foundation for an efficient and equally ecological and economic sustainable future. In the scope of a pitch battle, it gives start-ups the opportunity to present innovative ideas in a dynamic competition. The focus lies above all on the exchange of knowledge, promoting discussions and establishing new contacts. Over the course of two exciting days, the participants at the #neuland congress can look forward to current trends, concrete examples of good practice, lively discussions, stimulating lectures and a fabulous networking atmosphere revolving around current, social themes. “The idea behind the congress is to decisively push the vision of a sustainable future forward,” explained Michael Mronz, General Manager of the Aachener Reitturnier GmbH and CEO of the organisers, Rhein Ruhr City GmbH.

Immediately prior the CHIO Aachen, which kicks off on the evening of July 2^nd, with its spectacular Opening Evening, and when the celebrities walk over the most famous red carpet of the equestrian sport scene on their way to the traditional gala evening, the “Media Night“, the first day of the congress at the traditional showgrounds at the Aachen Soers, will be brought to a close with an impulse lecture by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Dr. Thomas Bach. Hence, this offers the speakers and the guests a unique opportunity to experience the breath-taking atmosphere of the CHIO Aachen and engage in an exchange and network in this first-class ambiance. Accredited journalists also have the chance to attend the impulse lecture.

Furthermore, on both days the congress will examine the important role sport plays within the society, especially with regards to sustainable financing models and its contribution towards social integration and social cohesion. “Sport is an important social axis of our society. It holds great social potential and at the same time bears a far-reaching economic responsibility,” stated Michael Mronz. “Particularly the theme of the sustainable financing of clubs, associations and sporting events takes on an ever-increasing significance in the planning and strategic alignment and will in future also be of key importance for the sports industry.” Celebrities such as the DOSB President, Thomas Weikert or the CEO and founder of Dyn, Christian Seifert, will be present when together with further high-ranking representatives of the sports industry, solutions for sustainable financing models and the related preservation of the important role of sport for the society are jointly discussed at the #neuland congress.

The CHIO Aachen Scientist Circle will be one of the themes addressed on the second day of the congress. This project brings equestrian experts together with leading scientists from Germany, Belgium and Switzerland and the focus of its work lies on the well-being of sports horses. Prof. Dr. Dirk Winter from the Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Science; Dr. rer. nat. Arne-Rasmus Dräger, an expert for artificial intelligence and developer of AI-based camera systems for monitoring the health of horses and CHIO Aachen Head of Sport, Birgit Rosenberg are participating.

“We are looking forward to providing the CHIO Aachen Scientist Circle with a stage amid this impressive setting, but at the same time also to the top level, interdisciplinary exchange on major sport-related and socially relevant future themes,” commented Philip Erbers, who in his capacity as a member of the board of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein, organisers of the CHIO Aachen, is among others responsible for the areas Digital Technology and Innovations. “I am convinced that ultimately the outcome will be interesting ideas on all themes.”

For 30 years, ‘The Silver Horse’ was the most prestigious media award in the areas of print, TV and radio. For some years now, it has paid tribute to a changing media landscape as the ‘Online and Social Media Award’. The jury – consisting of Dr. Ute Countess Rothkirch (DRFV board member), Wolfgang Brinkmann (German Riding and Driving Association, DRFV), Nadine Capellmann (dressage rider), Philip Erbers (ALRV Board Member) and Tobias Königs (Press Officer/CHIO Aachen) – were impressed by the diversity and quality of the submitted entries. These included both blogs and social media platforms as well as classic media, which have mastered the transformation into the digital world in totally different ways.

The winner will be announced during the Opening Ceremony of the CHIO Aachen 2024 on 2nd July.  The winning entry will be honoured with the ‘Silver Horse’ and a cash prize of 3000 euros. Second place will be honoured with 2000 euros, the third-placed entry with 1000 euros. The prize is jointly organised by the German Riders‘ and Drivers’ Federation (DRFV), the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein e.V. (ALRV) as well as Gina Capellmann-Lütkemeier and Nadine Capellmann.

It is an absolute premiere: In line with this year’s partner country, the USA, the equestrian sport stars are bringing a touch of Hollywood to the Aachen Soers. The dressage rider, Dinja van Liere, has slipped into the role of Marilyn Monroe, the recently-crowned World Cup winner, Patrik Kittel, is doing a fantastic impression of Elvis Presley and the winner of the Rolex Grand Prix in 2005, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, is personifying Audrey Hepburn. And as much as the wow-effect motifs differ, they all have one thing in common: The similarity to the original characters is astounding!

The new edition of the CHIO Aachen Magazine additionally looks ahead to the World Equestrian Festival, the CHIO Aachen 2024, and beyond that also holds many exciting background stories and interesting interviews in store. For example, the show-jumper, Willem Greve, opens up the gates of his riding establishment in Markelo, the Netherlands; the dressage Queen, Isabell Werth, talks about her Olympic career and the Swiss high-flyer, Edouard Schmitz, reveals how he succeeded in joining the ranks of the world elite in a flash. A few days before Germany’s biggest sporting event begins, a man with a rake is stood where the best horses in the world leave their traces in the stand during the CHIO Aachen. The man’s name is Martin Stockberg. And the designer and land art artist didn’t need more than his rake to conjure up a magnificent piece of art in the sand in the shadow of the Deutsche Bank Stadium. The fascinating piece of art measures around 70 x 70 metres. Recognise it from the ground? Impossible! It is necessary to view it from an aerial perspective to recognise the biggest homage to “100 years of equestrian show history”. “The first riding and driving show took place at the Aachen Soers in 1924, Birgit Rosenberg, ALRV Board Member, explained. “And of course we want to celebrate this remarkable anniversary in style.”

Martin Stockberg’s piece of art, which is equally impressive and transient, forms the prelude to these celebrations. Because the impressive motif will become a thing of the past after the next shower or two at the latest. But Stockberg, who regularly creates breath-taking sculptures in sand, in forests or in the snow, explained that precisely this transience is an essential element of his art. Before setting to work on-site, Stockberg makes a drawing, measures a few key points, the rest he carves out in the sand from memory. “It is a question of rhythm and concentration,” reports Stockberg. And then it almost becomes meditative, when he spends an hour or sometimes much longer tracing out specific patterns that are only recorded in his head. Thanks to a huge portion of overview, stamina and precision, but also the necessary joy in his work, extremely precise results ensue, which amaze the onlookers – the same is also true in Aachen.

However, beyond the impressive piece of art the organisers in Aachen have plenty more things planned in commemoration of the anniversary. Just a few days before the start of the CHIO Aachen 2024, the ALRV is already bringing the CHIO atmosphere to the city centre. From June 20^th – July 7^th, the exhibition at the ElisenGalerie is looking back on unique victories and highly emotional incidents from the 100 years of equestrian show history. On top of that posters, programmes and diverse “treasures” from the CHIO Aachen archive will trigger off plenty of CHIO feeling – from nostalgic to present day. And the two “Horse & Symphony” concerts, which traditionally serve as the breath-taking prelude of the biggest and most famous equestrian sport event in the world, will also pay homage to the 100 years of equestrian sport history this year. “The concerts promise to be musical, sporty and of course visually an historical event with many unforgettable moments,” assured Birgit Rosenberg, who in her capacity as Head of Sport at CHIO Aachen is also responsible for the show programme. The journey through the early days of show history in Aachen will thus hold plenty of spectacular highlights in store for the spectators. And on the evening of June 28^th and 29^th at the latest it will be lots of horses, who leave their magical traces in the sand at the CHIO Aachen grounds.

During her visit, Mona Neubaur was amazed to hear about the many offers of the CHIO Aachen CAMPUS. “I am really impressed about the very concentrated work that is characterised by team spirit and which enables a fantastic result for all equestrian sport enthusiasts,” raved the Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy as well as the Deputy State Premier of North Rhine Westphalia.

The 46-year-old is of course familiar with the World Equestrian Festival, CHIO Aachen, but on Wednesday she took a look at the CHIO Aachen CAMPUS, which was founded in 2020, for the first time personally. At the Aachen Soers, Birgit Rosenberg and Philip Erbers, the Executive Board members of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein (ALRV), explained the philosophy together with the entire team of the CHIO Aachen CAMPUS: Conveying knowledge, creating competence. All the year round. This is achieved through unique and exclusive training and further educational offers in the field of mass and top competition sport, always placing the focus on youth promotion.

The politician from the Green Party was impressed by the fact that sustainability in all its facets plays an important role in the further development of the CHIO Aachen CAMPUS – for example regarding the integration of Para Sport and the construction of the planned, new indoor equestrian sport arena: “This is an important theme in the sports sector, particularly in the area of mass sport: How can social values be conveyed? She is convinced that the sustainability practised has a totally different impact on the guests, who visit the grounds to take part in the offers, compared to when it is merely talked about in schools or at home.

There was a highlight on the agenda for Mona Neubaur towards the end of her visit: The Minister had the opportunity to try out the SAP equestrian sport simulator. She did very well in walk and trot, even if she was very modest about her own performance: “It was my first time on the machine, I wouldn’t dare try and assess it. But at least I didn’t fall off,” she joked. And directly combined that fact with an offer: If there were a simulator on wheels, she could imagine making a brief guest appearance in the Main Stadium during the Opening Ceremony of the CHIO Aachen 2024… Mona Neubaur will definitely be returning to the legendary showgrounds at the Soers on July 2^nd, whether in the role as a spectator or a participant remains to be seen after this offer. But as she stated, one thing is already certain now: “I am looking forward to my next visit to Aachen!”

Just under a month before the World Equestrian Festival begins, during the General Annual Meeting one could see how much the members of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein e.V. (ALRV) are looking forward to this year’s major event. First-class sport and the partner country, the USA, are promising a CHIO Aachen that not only the athletes and visitors love, but also Stefanie Peters, the President of the ALRV: “Experience top sport, meet people, shop, enjoy exquisite food – yes, simply have a great time. That is the unique combination that distinguishes our CHIO Aachen.”

In her speech she also made reference to the long equestrian sport history in Aachen, namely “100 years of equestrian show history” will be celebrated at the Soers this year. “What started off as a small and regional event, has in the meantime turned into a worldwide famous show. One can no longer imagine the international equestrian sport without the CHIO Aachen, it is a brand, unique, a success story,” Peters explained in the Deutsche Bank Stadium on Monday evening.

Over the course of all this time one thing has always taken top priority: the well-being of the horses. More than 600 will be participating again this year. “Not only the show is further developed year after year. We also always ensure the best possible conditions for the horses. They are the actual stars of the CHIO Aachen,” the President of the ALRV assured the members present.

In her speech, the Board Member, Birgit Rosenberg, underlined the fact the ALRV is aware of its responsibility in the area of animal welfare and presented the work of the “CHIO Aachen Scientist Circle” that was initiated in 2023, before she turned her attentions to the CHIO Aachen 2024. She promised the members top-class equestrian sport and above all plenty of US-American flair at the Aachen Soers. “The NRW/USA year is being celebrated in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2024 under the motto ‘A perfect match’. We too are convinced that the show performances and participants from the USA are going to be a ‘perfect match’ for the CHIO Aachen,” stated Rosenberg, who in her capacity as Director of the Sports Department is also responsible for the show programme at the biggest equestrian show in the world.

However, she began her speech with a review of last year’s World Equestrian Festival, “which was everything we wanted it to be in many respects,” Rosenberg said happily. After the challenging COVID years, one thing particularly delighted all of the parties concerned. “We were almost able to match the figures of the record year 2019 regarding the capacities in the stadiums. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the sold-out stadiums on all days of the show. This is what the riders appreciate so much about Aachen and what distinguishes us from many of the other showgrounds in the world,” Rosenberg emphasised.

“All of this wouldn’t be possible without our fantastic team,” her fellow board-member Philip Erbers said afterwards, accentuating the commitment of all the employees, before presenting the financial report of the past fiscal year. The annual accounts that were reviewed by the auditors of “Ernst & Young” reported a positive result.

The CHIO Aachen CAMPUS with its countless activities, which are also on the agenda in 2023, also belongs to the present and future of the ALRV. Starting with the youngest equestrian fans, who are given a playful introduction to the horse in the scope of the Kids Camps during the holidays, to the training offers such as for example the “Full-Service Training Day” and an exclusive live training with the British, dressage star, Charlotte Dujardin, through to the #neuland Congress. There are plenty of offers for 2024, which are all proving to be very popular again.

Due to the many pieces of good news, the members unanimously discharged the Executive Board and the Supervisory Board. There were no votes against the re-election of the Supervisory Board either. Dr. Stephan Kranz was newly appointed to the Supervisory Board as a replacement for the outgoing Tim Hammer. Armin Laschet is additionally supporting the Supervisory Board as a new member for the rest of the current term until 2025.

A chance encounter at an event got the ball rolling: Birgit Rosenberg, Member of the Managing Board of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein (ALRV), and Prof. Dr. Dirk Winter started talking about the topic of the scientific examination of animal welfare. Several telephone calls and a few months later, a significant project was born: the CHIO Aachen Scientist Circle.

This alliance comprises of eight voluntary scientists and horse experts from Germany, Belgium and Switzerland and occupies itself with the well-being of sport horses. The question posed, which was already addressed during CHIO Aachen 2023, is: How do the show horses feel during their stay at the CHIO Aachen compared to in their stables at home? The aim of the survey is to collect well-founded data on the status quo and find ways of making the horses’ stay more pleasant in future, so that they are offered the best possible conditions. On board last year: Four international show horses, which were monitored round-the-clock using AI-supported camera technology and whose stress levels were determined among others by measuring the faecal cortisol level.

The initial evaluations leave the scientists optimistic. “The observation has led to the positive conclusion that although the horses spend more time in the stable during the show in Aachen compared to when at home, they were kept occupied and exercised a lot,” explained Prof. Winter, Academic Dean Equine Management at the Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Science. Since the scientists of the CHIO Aachen Scientist Circle feel that the topic is very important and the examinations are to be further expanded at the coming shows, they are being assisted meanwhile by the PhD student, Leonie Krüger. Among others, in the course of her doctorate she will be responsible for evaluating the data collected so far. The cortisol samples taken during the show in 2023 comprised of samples from four days at the home yard, during the transportation to Aachen, while training and competing on-site, during the return transport and the following three days at home.

Leonie Krüger reported on the evaluation of the samples from the pilot survey: “Cortisol is produced during physical and psychological stress, which is why the level increased on the competition days. That is totally logical. The curve of the rider would probably be similar. The further cortisol levels that were taken while the horses were stabled in Aachen were pretty low.” The scientist interpreted these initial results as follows: “The transportation and the training in Aachen apparently didn’t have a great effect in terms of the stress level. And we were able to determine that once home the horses returned to the pre-competition level again very soon after the show.”

Pilot survey becomes an experimental design for the coming years

Krüger and Winter warn against an overevaluation or misinterpretation of the initial findings. “Science takes time. We cannot make any well-founded, definitive statements yet,” the PhD student emphasised. Winter added, “We now have an initial evaluation, but we can’t come to any deductions or general conclusions based on four horses.” To change this a much higher number of horses will take part in the survey during the CHIO Aachen 2024 already – at least twelve.

“We are looking ahead to the future. We will develop the experimental design for the next years based on the pilot survey. It has to be expedient and cover the right parameters so that we can come to really scientifically-based conclusions about the well-being of horses while stabled at shows,” explained Leonie Krüger. Among others, the monitoring per camera is to be enhanced by a direct observation of the animals. Beyond this the essential factors of the air in the stable are to be determined by sensors. It was noted that after monitoring around 30 to 40 horses within an overall period of three years, it will then be possible to come to a sound conclusion. However, the scientists are not expecting a final result in the classic sense. “There will always be new factors that influence the animals’ well-being, which we will have to examine,” they agreed. That is also why the CHIO Aachen Scientist Circle will be committed to the theme animal welfare long-term.

To ensure that the horses are monitored as well as possible in the future, Prof. Dr. Winter can also imagine having all the stables in Aachen fitted with cameras. “This would enable the organisers and the riders to demonstrate for instance that the living conditions of the horses are closely monitored.” Further possibilities of how additional animal welfare aspects can be monitored are being examined. “We are currently occupying ourselves with the application of further innovative, technical methods,” Winter revealed.

The CHIO Aachen could thus possibly also serve as a role model for other shows, even if the conditions for the horses do vary everywhere. Dirk Winter is convinced: “Aachen is the most important show worldwide. Other organisers could orientate themselves on the best possible standards we are developing here in the future.”
